When Captain America was killed off, it was a major media event. The recent possible death or retirement of Batman has also been creating a buzz in the press. Now, another longtime comic book character has been killed off, but not many have taken notice yet. If you plan on reading Secret Invasion #8, then you might want to stop reading now before you get to the spoilers. Secret Invasion #8 wraps up the Skrull invasion of Earth storyline that has been a central story in Marvel Comics for the last year. Like in virtually ever major comic book crossover event, there was a major character death at the conclusion of the series. The victim this time was actually a superheroine called the Wasp. While the Wasp is hardly a household name, she first appeared in comics over forty-five years ago. The Wasp was created by comic book legends Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. She made her debut in Tales To Astonish #44, which was published in June 1963. Her secret identity was Janet van Dyne, and she was a founding member of The Avengers. In the Secret Invasion, the Skrulls succeed in turning the Wasp into a human chemical bomb. In order to save other heroes and humans, Thor, who at one time was a fellow Avenger, had to kill the Wasp. In addition to killing off the Wasp, the conclusion to Secret Invasion also laid the groundwork for Marvel Comics next big event called Dark Reign.
