Today has been a big day for African-American versions of formerly Caucasian comic book characters. First, Marvel Comics announced the first black Spider-Man. Now, Entertainment Weekly has revealed news of the first black version of the DC Comics character Perry White. Laurence Fishburne has reportedly been cast to play Perry White in the new Superman: Man of Steel movie. Perry White is the editor-in-chief of the Daily Planet, and he is the boss of Clark Kent and Lois Lane in the Superman comic books. Perry White has traditionally been an elderly white man in both comic books and previous movies. In the Superman movies with Christopher Reeve, Jackie Cooper played Perry White. In Superman Returns with Brandon Routh, Frank Lagella played Perry White. In addition to traditionally being a white character, Perry White has also been somewhat of a background character. One might have expected him to only show up in a handful of scenes in the new Superman movie to yell out his catch phrase "Great Caesar's Ghost." However, the casting of an Emmy Award winning and Oscar nominated actor like Laurence Fishburne might be a good indication that Perry White will play a bigger role in the upcoming Man of Steel movie.
