Announced and previewed at this year's New York Comic Con, comics legend Stan Lee and Gil Champion's Pow! Entertainment and 1821 Comics have joined up to produce an original graphic novel that takes William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet and shunts it into a science-fiction future. Romeo & Juliet: The War, conceived by Lee and 1821 co-founder Terry Dougas, was written by Max Work with art by Skan Srisuwan. Here's how it's described in a press release from the publishers:

ROMEO AND JULIET: THE WAR is a futuristic and stylized retelling of William Shakespeare's classic Romeo and Juliet tale. The project has garnered a tremendous amount of acclaim from comic book fans and Stan Lee enthusiasts. To build even more momentum following the NY Comic Con unveiling, the creators released a tentpole-style trailer for ROMEO AND JULIET: THE WAR which can be seen at the 1821 Comics YouTube Channel:https://youtu.be/055c9Gic_g0. ROMEO AND JULIET: THE WAR story takes Shakespeare's star-crossed lovers and places them in the futuristic sci-fi/fantasy Empire of Verona, the most powerful territory on Earth. The MONTAGUES, powerful cyborgs made of artificial DNA, and the CAPULETS, genetically enhanced humans known for their speed and agility, worked in tandem to destroy all threats to the city. With no one left to fight, the Montagues and Capulets found themselves a new enemy: each other.

The comic has been made available in both an oversized hardcover collector's edition as well as the softcover version. Lee will be making a signing appearance in Los Angeles this week to promote the release, details of which will be made available on 1821 Comics's Facebook page.
