Bleeding Cool is reporting from the Image Comics Expo in California today that Moriarty, the ongoing comic based on the adventures of Professor James Moriarty following the death of Sherlock Holmes, will be adapted into a stage musical. The show will be written by series creator Daniel Corey and Raymond Schnurr, a composer who has worked for Warner Brothers and Disney in the past acccording to his website, where he's currently got a sample of a "work in progress" titled "Sinners" streaming. That particular song seems unlikely to be part of the Moriarty musical, which according to Image will be based largely on the comics' first arc (The Dark Chamber, available in trade paperback already) and feature hard rock music as well as influences derived from popular musical productions like Sweeney Todd and The Phantom of the Opera. Image Comics' Moriarty revolves around Professor Moriarty, twenty years after the fateful events at Reichenbach Falls, who finds himself directionless and ambitionless when faced with a world where there is no Sherlock Holmes to challenge him. Living modestly and in anonymity, he's blackmailed into service by MI5 when they lose track of Mycroft Holmes. Prior to jumping into comics and film, Corey was an actor, writer and director on the stage for years.  Moriarty is its first monthly work from a major comics publisher, following on the heels of Prophet, a graphic novel he wrote with artist Anthony Decidue, who also drew the first arc of Moriarty. Corey spoke at length with Comicbook.com's Panel Discussions podcast about Moriarty; the episode will run in early March.
