Way back in June, Comicbook.com was the first to report that a Neil Gaiman character would be re-introduced in the New 52. At the time, the information came way of Justice League Dark writer Jeff Lemire at a HeroesCon panel. It turns out he was talking about Timothy Hunter of The Books of Magic. But there's even bigger news that was a surprise announcement today at the San Diego Comic-Con. Timothy Hunter isn't the only Neil Gaiman character returning to the DC Universe. It turns out The Sandman is returning courtesy of Neil Gaiman himself. Gaiman made the surprise announcement via video during DC's Vertigo panel. JH Williams III will be the artist paired with Gaiman on the new Sandman series. The new Sandman mini-series will be published by Vertigo in 2013. "When I finished writing THE SANDMAN, there was one tale still untold. The story of what had happened to Morpheus to allow him to be so easily captured in The Sandman #1, and why he was returned from far away, exhausted beyond imagining, and dressed for war. It was a story that we discussed telling for Sandman's 20th anniversary... but the time got away from us. And now, with Sandman's 25th anniversary year coming up, I'm delighted, and nervous, that that story is finally going to be told," said Gaiman.
