Ron Howard Star Wars

With no official word yet on who the director will be for Star Wars Episode 7, the pool of directors who could be up for the assignment has grown very small, as many have declared themselves out of the running. Director Ron Howard's name popped up in some early speculation, but most seem to be have ruled him out as a serious candidate. However, we were reading through an old issue of Lucasfilm Fan Club magazine, and we stumbled across something that made us think Ron Howard might be a more likely candidate than many are thinking. In Lucasfilm Fan Club magazine #6 published in 1989, George Lucas was asked about his interest in directing any future Star Wars films. George Lucas replied, "I doubt that I would do it. The kind of films I'm interested in directing are not that kind. I would be looking for somebody like Ron Howard or Steven Speilberg, who are just extremely good directors, to do any future Star Wars movies." Granted this interview occurred a long time ago, and a lot has happened since then, including the release of three more Star wars films, but it's interesting that Ron Howard was one of two names on George Lucas' short list. Here's something else that is interesting. On November 5, Ron Howard tweeted, "I had fun meeting on the #Disney lot today. Vote tomorrow please pic.twitter.com/Ezr1hwjx." He also tweeted, "Classic photo in the lobby of the executive building on #Disney lot. + Please Vote tomorrow pic.twitter.com/k3fy7ndC." Ron Howard's Disney meeting was less than a week after Disney announced they would be acquiring Lucasfilm. Looking ahead at Ron Howard's directing schedule, he doesn't seem to have much on his plate other than Rush, which is almost done, and a Jay-Z documentary. Could Ron Howard wind up being the surprise director of Star Wars Episode 7?
