Thor The Dark World Review

The movie theater resource Twitter account Exhibitor Relations is reporting that Thor: The Dark World made $109 million this weekend, even without opening in the U.S. The largest single territory was the United Kingdom, where the film was made and largely takes place, where it took in over $13 million.  You can see more specific numbers in the tweets embedded below. This isn't unprecedented; both Iron Man 3 and Marvel's The Avengers opened early overseas and in both cases they generated more than $100 million in their first weekends ($198 million for Iron Man 3 and $185 million for The Avengers)--but given the more modest expectations for Thor, its performance overseas likely gives Marvel Studios cause for celebration. The first Thor made around $400 million worldwide, including less than $200 million at the domestic box office. The sequel is expected to have a much bigger opening but it will share the end of November with The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, suggesting that domination past the first couple of weeks will be nearly impossible.
