B.J. Novak’s character in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has finally been revealed as Alistair Smythe, the Ultimate Spider-Slayer.Novak was cast in the film back in March 2013, but his role up until this point has remained a mystery. The film’s director, Marc Webb, spilled the beans on Novak’s mystery role in a tweet about the trailer for Novak’s new book One More Thing. In Marvel comics, Alistair Smythe is the initially paralyzed son of Spencer Smythe, the creator of the Spider-Slayers. The Spider-Slayers were a series of robots designed for the specific purpose of killing Spider-Man. When Spencer failed and then died of radiation poisoning brought on from his work, Alistair blamed Spider-Man and continued Spencer’s work on the Spider-Slayers. Eventually, Alistair attached a bioorganic carapace to himself that restored his ability to walk, gave him full body armor and increased his strength, turning him into the Ultimate Spider-Slayer.Smythe is just the latest villain announced for the film, which already includes Electro (Jamie Foxx), the Rhino (Paul Giamatti), and Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan) and will bring about the formation of the Sinister Six.The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theaters May 2, 2014.
