Avatar Press today officially announced the forthcoming collected edition of World War Z author Max Brooks's zombies-versus-vampires series The Extinction Parade, based on a novella by the author and featuring art by Raulo Caceres. No firm release date is yet set for the 160-page trade paperback collection, but you can order it from comics retailers via the May solictation form in Previews. No relation to Marvel's Empire of the Dead, which takes on the same basic premise, but written by Night of the Living Dead co-creator and director George A. Romero and taking place in the world of his movies. Brooks's version predates Romero's (currently ongoing) series by quite a bit.

In a world where the zombie plague has put the human race on the endangered species list, another predatory undead species realizes that to stand by idly means the end of their food supply.  Vastly outnumbered by the zombie hordes, vampires descend into all-out subdead war, with humanity caught in the crossfire.  This series further examines Brooks' fascination with the lethal races of the undead and brings his unique voice to comics at a time when horror fiction is at an all-time high in popularity. "I'm trying to tell the story of a species confronted with its own demise, a species that previously believed it was more or less invincible," Brooks said in an interview with ComicBook.com. "In The Extinction Parade, I wanted to explore the dangers that come with perceived privilege; the arrogance, the ignorance, the complete inexperience with struggle. Here is a species that always believed itself to be at the top of the food chain and therefore never developed the kind of coping mechanisms we as 'weaker' humans were forced to adopt. Here's a species that suddenly has confront the fact that all their supposed strengths might actually be fatal weaknesses." Extinction Parade collects comics issues #1 – 5, as well as a massive undead zombies vs. vampires cover gallery.
