“Early this Father’s Day morning, our dad Casey Kasem passed away surrounded by family and friends,” she wrote. “Even though we know he is in a better place and no longer suffering, we are heartbroken. Thank you for all your love, support and prayers. The world will miss Casey Kasem, an incredible talent and humanitarian; we will miss our Dad.”
Kasem was the longtime voice of Shaggy on Scooby-Doo and appeared as Robin on Super Friends and a number of other DC specials and animated shows. Lesser-known animated appearances included Captain Planet and the Planeteers and Sesame Street.
Kasem also voiced Cliffjumper in the original Transformers animated series and feature film.
He voiced Shaggy from the character’s introduction in 1969 until 2009, when Warner Bros. Home Entertainment released Scooby-Doo! and the Samurai Sword. He continued to perform as Shaggy’s father Colton Rogers for some time after that, with episodes released in 2010, 2011 and 2013.
Kasem was suffering from advanced Parkinson’s Disease and dementia. His wife Jean Kasem moved him to a convalescent home in Santa Monica a few months ago. His case has made headlines in recent months when a custody dispute between his children and wife boiled over into the news becuase Kasem was briefly reported missing. A court case turned Kasem over to his children, who claimed his wife had been blocking their access to their father.
It was his daughter Kerri who made the decision earlier this week to remove Kasem from life support.
He was inducted into the National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 1985.
