Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice has surpassed expectations that it would earn $140 million at the domestic box office this weekend, taking home $170.1 million and becoming the biggest opening weekend in Warner Bros. studio history.

To do so, the film eked out Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, which earned $169.1 million.
So far, the film is the #6 movie of the year globally, with $285 million counted. It will likely blow past $300 million today as the international receipts for Saturday start to be counted. In the U.S., it’s already the year’s #3 film, behind Deadpool ($349 million) and Zootopia ($241 million).
It’s also the top opening ever in March and the biggest pre-summer opening weekend of all time. At the beginning of the weekend, projections started at $140 and went as high as $178 million. Whether that $8 million drop could be related to poor reviews and a B CinemaScore, or just margin of error, is anybody’s guess.
