The Bromley Batman has stepped out of the shadows—only to make sure that people call him “The Shadow.”

As ComicBook.com reported last week, Bromley, England inherited a masked vigilante that—despite his innocuous appearance—newspapers dubbed “The Bromley Batman.” The Bromley Batman, or Shadow, quickly gained fame as several of eye-witnesses began to step forward with their own sightings of and encounters with the bearded protector.

With this newfound fame, The Shadow reached out to local newspaper The Evening Standard to better explain his mission and desire for a new moniker. If the anonymous person who contacted the Evening Standard is indeed the Shadow (which seems likely, as his description of thwarted muggings matched official reports) then he is a man between 25 and 50 years-old, and he has fought crime for several years.

Tired of seeing unanswered crimes on his streets, The Shadow wrote that he donned the mask because no one else was willing to step-up.

“I just want to make a difference and leave this world a tiny bit better for the younger generation to inherit,” he wrote in his anonymous email to The Evening Standard. “I got sick of seeing crime on the news and in the papers with rarely anyone willing to step in and help people in need.”

He also noted that he hated the title of Bromley Batman, citing a stronger kinship to classic pulp hero The Shadow.

“As a young boy I always enjoyed The Shadow, so if any name then that one kind of makes some sense’.”

That sort of seems like trading in a Lamborghini for a Subaru, but we’ll call him whatever he wants if he keeps fighting the good fight. But what say you, readers? Do you prefer The Bromley Batman, or The Shadow? Let us know in the comments!
