Captain America: Civil War will likely be the biggest movie in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date. Sure, Avengers: Age of Ultron was big, but this is Iron Man vs. Captain America big. This movie includes Spider-Man and Black Panther and almost every other hero already established in the MCU. It’s only right Civil War be watched on the biggest, most immersive screen possible, which with today’s technology is IMAX.

While Civil War wasn’t shot in the IMAX format in its entirety, one chunk of the film was and it sounds like it could be the climax. Specifically, it is a battle. It is Captain America’s team charging at Iron Man’s on an airport tarmac and it will last about 15 glorious minutes and every second of those minutes was shot on a brand new IMAX camera.
The account from SuperHeroHype claims that the actors repeatedly charged at one another and some would “splinter off” to be added in later with CG, flying towards their enemy.
The choice to shoot the battle sequence in IMAX may have been one influenced by more than the film quality. While the increased quality is a nice bonus, the Russo Brothers will move on from Captain America: Civil War to Avengers: Infinity War Parts I and II, which will be about 5 hours worth of Marvel Studios films shot entirely in the IMAX format. Perhaps this was a bit of a test run.
Captain America: Civil War hits theaters May 6.
