Ron Howard’s whale tale starring Chris Hemsworth (Avengers: Age of Ultron) harpooned $3.8M on Friday and is expected to finish in second-place for the weekend with $10.5M. For a film that reportedly cost over $100M to produce, In The Heart of the Sea is off to a very poor start. Warner Brothers will just have to add it to their pile of films that have sunk at the box office this year, which includes Pan, Our Brand Is Crisis, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and Jupiter Ascending. On a somewhat brighter side, it received a ‘B+’ CinemaScore from audiences, though, its audience was predominantly older men.

Meanwhile on Friday, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 grossed $3.3M for second-place. It should finish in first for the weekend with $11.1M, pushing its domestic total to $244.3M. Creed nabbed third with $2.95M. Krampus took fourth with $2.5M. Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur roared into fifth with $2.2M. The Night Before captured sixth with $1.2M. Spectre snatched seventh with $1.1M — $10M shy of $200M domestic benchmark. Spotlight pocketed $710K for eighth. Brooklyn stole ninth-place with $581K. The Peanuts Movie held on for tenth with $569K.
