Matt Ryan, the actor who will play the lead role in NBC’s upcoming Constantine, says he was kicked out of his Comic-Con hotel for smoking.

Relayed via his Twitter feed, the actor notes the irony of being kicked out of a hotel for smoking when he was attending the convention because he’s playing a noted chain smoker.

Of course, all of that chain smoking occurs in the comics, but will not be seen in the television adaptation. It’s a significant compromise in bringing the character to television, given how the habit is one of the things most closely associated with him, even leading to a storyline in which he is diagnosed with cancer.
DC Entertainment has been trying to clean up Constantine’s image a bit, since reintroducing him in the New 52 following the cancellation of his long-running Vertigo Comics title, Hellblazer.
Constantine premieres October 24.
