Following this week’s blockbuster news that the movie will hit theaters in 2016, Newsarama reached out to Liefeld, who gave them a statement that said in part:

“I’m thrilled for Tim Miller, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick and Ryan Reynolds as well as all the guys at Blur Studio! This is a tremendous achievement for them! Rhett and Paul wrote a brilliant, and I don’t throw that word around loosely, a brilliant script! Audiences are going to go on the ride of their collective lives with this film as they envisioned it! Tim Miller is a genius, he is brilliant as everyone who witnessed the leaked footage witnessed! There is so much more to come! Deadpool fans will freak out when they see all that Tim and the boys have in store for them!”

The film, which has been stuck in development hell for years, finally emerged as a top contender to be one of Fox’s big, upcoming superhero tentpoles after a test animation from Blur Studio was pirated at a screening and made its way online back in July.

After it leaked and became a viral sensation online, Blur officially released it, only to pull it back hours later without explanation.

“The movie has been in a state of limbo for a while. There was such an overpowering reaction to the footage, you sort of feel like, ‘Oh, so we weren’t crazy for our reasons for loving this character, for loving this role.’ It’s interesting to see the power of the Internet. It’s awe-inspiring, actually,” Reynolds said in a newspaper interview earlier this month. “And it’s neat that Twitter and Facebook and Instagram can move mountains when used in the right way.”

The same day Reynolds’ interview made its way to the comics press (it sat for about a week without anyone noticing it first), Fox officially announced Deadpool is coming.

So Liefeld, always vocal and always an advocate for the movie, has spoken. What did co-creator Fabian Nicieza have to say about the news?

Deadpool is coming to theaters in February 2016.
