While Fox doesn’t have the rights to use Hydra in its movies, that didn’t stop them from sneaking in a cameo by one of Deadpool’s best friends and frequent sidekicks — Bob, Agent of Hydra.

Bob was created by Deadpool co-creator Fabian Nicieza along with artist Reilly Brown and has appeared in dozens of comics, usually Deadpool books, since his first appearance in Cable and Deadpool #38.

A cowardly and not-too-bright guy, Bob turned to crime early in life and found himself working for Hydra when he came up against Deadpool. A little torture sweet talk, a little torture, and bingo-bango! Bob was working on the side of the angels…

…or, as close to the side of the angels as Deadpool ever works on. Whatever.

Anyway, while Hydra is obviously never name-dropped in the film, we do get an appearance by Bob, who’s working as a goon for Ajax. The two stop mid-fight and realize they used to be buddies, before Deadpool knocks him out (but doesn’t kill him, as far as we see — because what are friends for?). In the comics, Bob is married to a woman named Allison, but in the movies, it’s Gail — likely a wink and a nod to onetime Deadpool writer Gail Simone.

In the movie, of course, there’s a memorable scene in which Deadpool cuts off his own hand to escape arrest, leaving a bloodied stump with its middle finger still sticking up for Colossus to find on the other end of the handcuffs. In the comics, Bob once recovered and reattached Deadpool’s severed hand (courtesy of Wolverine, in case you were curious), allowing his healing factor to kick in and avoiding the need to re-grow a hand from scratch.

Because what are friends for?
