20th Century Fox has released a new clip from Ridley Scott’s The Martian and it features NASA astrophysicist Rich Purcell (Donald Glover) explaining how they can save astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon), who is stranded on Mars.

Purcell uses a stapler, a pen, NASA Director Teddy Sanders (Jeff Daniels) and NASA Spokeswoman Annie Montrose (Kristen Wiig) to demonstrate his plan, which is to have the Hermes spacecraft accelerate instead of decelerate when it approaches Earth. It can use our planet to pick up even more speed with a gravity assist and then NASA can send a probe to resupply the ship as it heads back out to Mars. Once it closes in on the Red Planet, Hermes will be traveling too fast to scoop up Watney, but he can use a Mars Ascent Vehicle (MAV) to rendezvous with his crew.

Check out the clip in the video below.

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return.

Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, The Martian features a star studded cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Peรฑa, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.

The Martian will land in theaters October 2, 2015.
