In a new MTV interview with Chris Evans, the actor was asked about an apparent rumor that he’ll be handing off his shield in Captain America 3. I didn’t even know such a rumor existed, if I’m being honest. I certainly don’t know what it’s based upon.
Evans didn’t give a straight answer, not at all, but did a little dance around the subject and made it seem pretty clear, if not definitive, that Captain America 3 would not be his last Marvel movie.

“Who’s handing off the shield? Don’t take my job from me prematurely dude. I’m sure it’ll happen at some point, all good things have to come to an end. But I’m really happy playing the character.”
I dare say he would have given a different answer if the “rumor” he’d been asked about had hinged on the third Avengers film and not the third Captain America movie. If you’ve been keeping count, it’s the last Avengers picture that will see Evans fulfil his contract to Marvel Studios.
I know this for a fact because I personally chatted about it with him back in the spring during the Winter Soldier junkets.
Of course, he might sign on for more. He might. But, personally, I doubt it. In the meantime, if you’re party to gossip about Evans having just one more Cap film in him before departing, do a recount. I’d place good money on Avengers 3 being his last MCU appearance.
Oh, and while we’re here, Evans danced around another rumor in the same interview. Would Captain America 3 see him leading a new lineup of heroes, an offshoot of the Avengers?
“Marvel doesn’t disappoint,” he said, “Whatever you’re hoping for, you’re probably going to get.”
Again, I bet you a hot Dunkin’ Donut that he’s actually referring to The Avengers 3.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is released on DVD and Blu-ray in the US today. Here in the UK, we’ve been enjoying it for over a week. Rule Britannia.
