Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks, Beauty and the Beast) weighs in on the glut of superhero films.

The Oscar-winning actress used to enjoy watching superhero films, but over the years she has grown tired of the genre. She prefers the light-hearted style, like Richard Donner’s Superman films starring Christopher Reeve as the Man of Steel. “I loved the original Superman with Chris Reeve because there was a real tongue-in-cheek-ness to it,” Thompson told Vulture.
So why has she lost in the genre? The sheer number of superhero films studios are churning out year after year and the predictable storylines are the culprits. “After a while, you do get a tiny bit cynical about it,” she explained. “The fact that I know they’re going to win out in the end has now slightly interfered with my continuing to go to those movies.”
She’s also not pleased with the number of times the same superheroes get rebooted.”If I see yet another Spider-Man, I’m going to have to actually hang myself. I can’t do it anymore!” she exclaimed. “They’re all marvelous, but how many times can you make this franchise, for crying out loud?”
She may not be in line for Tom Holland’s first Spider-Man film, but she hasn’t completely sworn off all superhero films. “I’m up for Wonder Woman, totally,” she added.
Beauty & The Beast to be released on March 17, 2017.
