The comic, originally published as a pair of original graphic novels with artist James Brouwer, inspired an animated series on Netflix.
“With the The Deep sailing onto Netflix, James Brouwer and I were very keen for our US fans to see the Nekton’s adventures where they began—in comics,” said Tom Taylor, best known to American audiences for his superhero work like All-New Wolverine and Injustice: Gods Among Us. “With BOOM being home to great all-ages stories we love, like Lumberjanes and Steven Universe, we were thrilled by [BOOM! Editor-in-Chief] Matt Gagnon, [Editor] Dafna Pleban, and [President of Publishing & Marketing] Filip Sablik’s enthusiasm for our daring aquanaut family. Sure, the Nekton Family may live on a submarine, but we know they’ve found a fantastic second home at BOOM!”
The Deep follows the Nekton family, who have explored the depths of the oceans for generations, discovering the unknown in the Aronnax, a state-of-the-art submarine capable of diving to incredible depths. When an earthquake off the coast of Greenland leads to strange reports of monster sightings, William and Kaiko Nekton, along with their kids Fontaine and Ant (and of course, Ant’s pet fish Jeffrey), dive into the mystery.
The series, published in cooperation with Australian publisher Gestalt, who first released it, heads to BOOM! in January. You can see the animated adaptation of The Deep on Netflix now.
A collected edition of The Deep will be available in the U.S. in the fall of 2017.
