When news broke that Johnny Depp had joined the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them franchise, fans quickly began speculating if the actor would appear in the first film. The movie, which premieres later this month, will see Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) embark on an adventure to collect his missing magical creatures before he becomes ensnared in a developing revolution courtesy of Gellert Grindelwald. As such, fans felt that Depp would have to appear in the film – and they were right.

In a recent interview with E! Online, Redmayne addressed Depp’s secret cameo. The actor joking asked the site, “Wait, Johnny Depp is in this movie?” when asked about the scene.
“We know nothing. We can reveal nothing,” he said. “One of the wonderful things about making this film was the story that J.K. Rowling had written and the surprises and secrecy for it.”
He went on, saying, “I know in the age of social media, it’s impossible to keep those secrets but if there’s any way we can keep some of them secret, it would be so lovely to do.”
Alison Sudol, who plays Queenie Goldstein, also talked about the cameo. “We didn’t have to keep it for that long because we only found out shortly before it was released publicly, luckily,” Alison Sudol said. “And we’ve had to keep so many secrets at this point that we basically are used to having to be vaults.”
Colin Farrell also talked about Depp’s involvement and said he also didn’t learn about the cameo until “very late.”
Of course, fans have had previous confirmation about Depp’s cameo prior to these interviews. When Deadline confirmed the elder actor had joined the franchise, they had plenty to say about Depp’s inclusion in Fantastic Beasts.
According to the site, Depp will co-star in the film alongside Eddie Redmayne who is set to reprise his role as Newt Scamander. So far, there is no official word on who Depp will be playing, and fans likely won’t hear about his role until Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them drops. Deadline hinted that Depp may cameo briefly in the upcoming film when it debuts November 18th, but there is no source available to corroborate that rumor.
Recently, director David Yates and producer David Heyman confirmed Depp had already filmed scenes for the first film – and they confirmed who the actor was playing as well. Heyman said he was amazed that Depp’s shooting schedule wasn’t leaked soon after he filmed.
“It was completely bonkers. I was convinced it [would be leaked] you can keep very few secrets nowadays, especially something like that! When he came to Leavesden and we filmed for two days…and it didn’t come out. That’s mad.”
The duo then went on to confirm Depp is playing Gellert Grindelwald which is something ComicBook.com speculated a while ago.
