When Dark Knight III: The Master Race was first announced, DC Entertainment billed it as the third and final installment in a trilogy from acclaimed comic book writer/artist Frank Miller.

Miller, who wrote and drew The Dark Knight Returns and The Dark Knight Strikes Again, served only as a co-writer (according to writer Brian Azzarello) or a consultant (to hear Miller tell it) on Dark Knight III, but says he plans on writing Dark Knight IV, already in the planning stages, himself.
So, does this mean we’ll be getting a more or less indefinite franchise out of what was once a stand-alone miniseries?
“I certainly hope so,” Miller told ComicBook.com. “After the first one, I said ‘Never again.’ After the second one, I said ‘Never again.’ Brian looks like he’s doing a terrific job; I can’t wait to jump in myself again. There’s no reason not to keep going with these. The character is immortal and more ideas spring to mind all the time.”
Miller, who also told us he’d like to do an all-ages mystery series featuring the Carrie Kelley version of Robin introduced in The Dark Knight Returns, was blunt when we asked whether he foresaw a future for the franchise at DC without his own involvement down the line.
“No,” Miller said simply.
The Dark Knight III: The Master Race #1 will be in comic shops next Wednesday, November 25 from Miller, Azzarello, Andy Kubert and Klaus Janson.
