Aided by HBO’s growing digital platforms, Game of Thrones had an insane amount of viewers glued to their TVs, phones, or tablets this past season. Season six averaged 25.1 million viewers across the board through linear plays, DVR recordings, HBO On Demand hits, and HBO GO/HBO NOW streams. In comparison, that staggering number is about 5 million more than what Game of Thrones‘ last season pulled in with only 20.2 million viewers.

In fact, HBO has reported that its digital platforms provided nearly 40% of the sixth season’s total views. Compared to Game of Thrones‘ fifth season, HBO GO and HBO NOW were up a total of 91% this year in streaming. It should come as no surprise that these numbers and ratings all go to show that Game of Thrones is still the reigning HBO series as the show sits upon the channel’s Iron Throne.

Since its debut, Game of Thrones has largely enjoyed high ratings despite the fact that many households still haven’t bought into HBO’s services. In the series’ fifth season, each episode managed to average 19.8 million viewers and held onto steady ratings above 3.5 in the desired 18-49 demographic.

As fans are already anticipating the show’s seventh season, HBO has let slip some news which has bummed out diehard Game of Thrones followers. Earlier today, HBO announced that Game of Thrones would be launching its seventh season next summer which is a departure from the series’ traditional spring premiere. The production team also confirmed rumors by saying the the series’ upcoming seasons would be getting shortened episode orders. Currently, the seventh season is set to be comprised of just 7 episodes.
