It’s also no secret that DC Entertainment has long been trying to develop the property for film; at one point, The Rock was attached, and it had been in development for years on and off before, in 2013, somebody at Warners finally said that version of the project was dead. It wasn’t long before rumors started to kick up, though, that it might be revitalized in a new, more Man of Steel-friendly iteration and back in June, veteran entertainment journalist Nikki Finke claimed that it would be the next DC Comics adaptation on Warner Bros.’ development schedule, as she expects it to be announced at Comic Con International: San Diego next week.

Asked at the Television Critics Association yesterday what properties he’d like to see the company mine, Johns gave an answer that may be for TV or for movies — even IGN, whose report is being quoted as the source of Johns’s answer, doesn’t know — but certainly seems to gel with the Finke story.

That’s becuase, asked who he’d like to see adapted next, he simply said, Shazam…and if he elaborated on that at all, nobody quoted him on it.

The character has had other-media success in the past, from film serials and radio shows in the 1940s to both live-action and animated TV series in the ’70s.
