For months, fans have reacted to the idea of a Ghostbusters reboot with… a certain amount of anger. The typical responses of the internet like “ruining my childhood” have been frequent, as have more vitriol-filled and NSFW versions of that argument.

Director Paul Feig took that reaction and ran with it, frequently calling his movie a reboot, and saying it didn’t have anything to do with the original films outside of conceptually.

Then, Thursday morning, the first Ghostbusters trailer dropped, and it literally began with “30 Years Ago, Four Scientists Saved New York.”

So yes, this movie, 2016’s Ghostbusters, absolutely takes place in the same world as the first two films from the 80s. This is a world where not only have ghosts existed, they’ve nearly destroyed New York a couple of times, and that’s the world these new characters, these women, grew up in. It will fundamentally change the dynamic, even if it’s largely been explained away by government releases and urban legends.

Ultimately, it’s a pretty fun trolling job by Feig, but should have been obvious to anyone really watching the development of the film. It’s all one world, and no one’s childhood is being ruined.
