It has been a busy year for Dragon Ball Super. The long-awaited anime series finally debuted in 2015, and it continued its unstoppable takeover well into the next year. In 2016, Toei Animation saw Dragon Ball Super go toe-to-toe with One Piece to become one of Japan’s most popular anime series – and it is time us fans celebrated.

Honorable Mention: Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan

The only reason this moment isn’t higher on the list is because it technically aired in 2015, but it was a close-call. The godly Super Saiyan state made itself known in Dragon Ball Super on Dec 20, 2015 to ring in the holidays. The episode titled “Clash! Freeza vs. Son Goku! This is the Fruit of My Training!” introduced the stunning state, and fans were left in awe of Goku’s training. The Super Saiyan God form was adopted by Goku as the warrior faced off against Frieza once more. The hero enters the state, leaving his comrades aghast when they can no longer sense his ki, and even King Kai wonders just how Goku was able to pull off the transformation without the help of other Saiyans. 

Black Goku Super Saiyan Rose

When Goku Black came onto the scene in Dragon Ball Super, fans were immediately told that the baddie meant business. The villain comes to Goku’s world after he seeks out Future Trunks. The latter boy managed to escape Goku Black’s tyranny in his own timeline, but the baddie was not going to let him escape so easily. Teaming up with Zamasu, Goku Black eventually shows down with Goku, Vegeta, and Future Trunks. He enters Super Saiyan Rose, a state that overpowers even Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan. While fans complained the state was a bit of a deus-ex machina for the villain, the sudden reveal left fans intrigued as they watched Goku Black beat on the Z-Fighters.

Future Trunks Returns

After being introduced in Dragon Ball Z, Future Trunks went back to his own time and left fans frustrated. Audiences wanted more of the Saiyan because of his intense power and chic personality, so they were ecstatic to see Future Trunks return to the Dragon Ball universe. The hero returned in “An Sos from the Future! A Dark New Enemy Emerges!!” and fans watched as Future Trunks was involved in a massive battle at home against Goku Black. The introduction was an intense, action-packed ordeal – and it got fans hooked on the upcoming “Future Trunks” arc.

Black Goku’s Identity Revealed

When it came to Goku Black, fans were curious about who the villain actually was. Obviously, the baddie looked just like Goku to the point that even Future Trunks attacked the hero when he thought Goku was his evil alter. Fans kept questioning who Goku Black really was until the answer was revealed towards the end of the “Future Trunks” arc. Fans learned that the villain was not a new character; It had been the future iteration of Zamasu all along. The Supreme Kai apprentice stole the body of his timeline’s Goku and teamed up with his other self to bring down the Z-Fighters and usurp mankind.

Vegito Makes An Appearance

During the “Future Trunks” arc, fans were also treated to another explosive battle involving a favorite fusion of theirs. During “The Climactic Battle! The Miraculous Power of a Relentless Warrior,” audiences watched as Goku and Vegeta fused into Vegito in a bid to beat fusion Zamasu. Goku pleaded with his rival to undergo the fusion, but Vegeta only relented once the Supreme Kai Gowasu promised the combo would not last forever. Finally bound into one powerful warrior, Vegito quickly gave Zamasu all sorts of grief before the fusion suddenly puttered out.

Future Trunk’s New Super Saiyan State

The creator of Dragon Ball once told fans that the newest anime would not reveal any new Super Saiyan states after the debut of Goku’s Super Saiyan God transformations. Clearly, that was not true. During the “Future Trunks” arc, fans were surprised with one of the series’ best moments to-date thanks to the otherworldly Saiyan. During his battle against Zamasu, Future Trunks suddenly went into a Super Saiyan state that no one had seen before. The intense transformation reminded some of Broly’s Legendary Super Saiyan State, but they have since learned the form is called Super Saiyan Rage. The unprecedented form was not only cool to witness, but it also held an insane amount of power. If Future Trunks had been more coordinated with his assault, he may have destroyed by Goku Black and Zamasu, but the pair had teamwork on their side while Trunks had little more than blind anger.
