The Will Smith-led sci-fi/horror vehicle was a huge box office success, and Warners has long wished they could make it into a franchise, but this is the first time a project has made it this far.
The script, originally titled A Garden at the End of the World, was written (and then rewritten) by Gary Graham, who was working at an Apple Store when he sold the script. Warners asked him, because there were apparently enough thematic similarities to the original book and film, to consider reinventing his script as a launchpad for an I Am Legend film franchise.
The reboot will not feature Will Smith.
Retrofitting an existing script to fit a property is nothing new; it’s been done in Hellraiser, Dungeons and Dragons, Die Hard and other popular franchises.
