On his personal Facebook account earlier this week, Worlds’ Finest artist Kevin Maguire (wow, that sounds like high praise if you read it out loud, doesn’t it?) did a “fan casting” of a Justice League International movie.Of course, “fan casting” hardly does him justice; it carries a bit more weight coming from Maguire, who drew the series for much of its run and established the visual style that defined many of the characters for years to come.Since we’ve discussed in the past how, while it’s financially implausible, a Giffen/DeMatteis take on the characters could be a hugely entertaining movie or TV series, it seemed like something worth sharing, if only to know that the creators think about this kinda stuff sometimes too. Here’s Maguire on his picks, many of which are pretty inspired. So we’re going to share it with you. What? It’s a public post.

If I were making a JLI movie right now, here’s who I’d cast: Sam Hamm as Maxwell Lord Paul Rudd as Blue Beetle Justin Timberlake as Booster Gold Jeremy Renner as Guy Gardner Scott Adkins as Batman The Rock as Martian Manhunter Rachel MacAdams as Black Canary Patrick Warburton as Captain Marvel Peter Dinklage as Oberon
I’m going to go ahead and guess that Maguire is talking about Jon Hamm, the current “handsomest man in America” pick for just about every straight man role following the success of Mad Men, and not Sam Hamm (who wrote the 1989 Batman and a never-produced script for Watchmen widely discussed as one of the best unproduced scripts of the decade), to play Maxwell Lord, in which case it’s pretty easy to see.Personally, as a big Booster Gold fan, I enjoy the Giffen/DeMatteis/Maguire-style Booster but also like to see the character taken at least somewhat seriously, which is difficult with Timberlake. Also, there’s an appeal to some of the suggestions that Maguire’s Facebook friends and fans put forth, like doing Ben Stiller as Beetle and Owen Wilson as Booster, or something to that effect, playing off the existing chemistry of a pair of actors to play up the hetero-lifemate role if it was going to be a JLI-style story where the pair are inseparable. One fan (as seen above) had even already photoshopped the pair into mock movie posters.I don’t know an awful lot about Scott Adkins, but he looks big, square-jawed and tough. I could see him taking out Renner in one punch which, let’s face it, would be the key moment for Batman in a JLI movie. The Rock cast as Martian Manhunter seems to be the one that drew the most objection from readers, although they were more apt to give alternative roles for The Rock than alternative actors to play J’Onn J’Onzz. Andre Braugher is a good choice that was put forth, although he’s a bit old for it. My favorite pick of those recommended by the fans would have to be Tom Hardy, who has drama and action chops but also strikes me as somebody who could carry the lighter moments required by being one of the most powerful beings in the world, who sits on the couch eating copious amounts of Oreo cookies most of the time. Both Warburton and Dinklage seem just…too perfect to even analyze, although a few fans pointed out that MacAdams didn’t really look the superhero part. What do you think?
