Man of Steel Entertainment Weekly

If you’re wondering if Entertainment Weekly’s Summer Preview Issue is worth the price of admission, we can tell you that it is for the Man of Steel coverage alone. The extensive coverage on other summer movies is just a bonus. For those worried that it might be a rehash of what’s already known from the trailers, it’s not. There are around half a dozen new images, as well as the most extensive details revealed about the movie so far, including some major spoilers. As already revealed in EW’s preview of the issue, there is no Kryptonite in Man of Steel. However, director Zack Snyder describes the movie itself as “emotional Kryptonite.” What does that mean? While pretty near indestructible, Superman will be subject to emotional frailties. Terms like introspection, loneliness, hunted, fearful and soul-searching are used to describe Clark Kent’s early time on Earth. As was hinted at in the trailer when Jonathan Kent told a young Clark that maybe he should have let the kids on a school bus drown, Ma and Pa Kent don’t want Clark using his powers even if they were personally in danger. Of course, this puts young Clark in a situation where he can never fight back or defend himself against others. As far as Krypton, Kal-El (Superman) is unique on that planet as well. While most Kryptonian children are engineered rather than being born, Kal-El was a natural conception. His very existence is described as highly illegal on Krypton. As far as the villains, General Zod is described as a “die-hard supremacist.” Zod actually has sympathy and affection for Superman, but he wants Superman to be true to his Kryptonian heritage rather than defending Earth. Faora is described as initially acting like a good girl, but in reality she’s a psychopath. As has long been rumored, it is confirmed that Lois Lane is taken aboard Zod’s spacecraft. Lois is described as being as much of a threat as a she is a love interest for Superman. She’s also described as being someone who will pick up and leave at a moment’s notice. While much has been made of Superman losing his red tight, the Superman suit is actually part of Kryptonian culture. It’s the type of suit that all Kryptonians wear under their armor. Superman’s suit just doesn’t have the snap-on battle gear like other Kryptonian suits.
