Universal is bringing back The Mummy in 2017 to kick off the shared Universal Monsters universe of films, but there may be a twist. According to the Hollywood Reporter, director Alex Kurtzman and writer Jon Spaihts may reimagine the classic monster as a woman with a new origin story.
In both previous versions of The Mummy franchise, the monster was male, played by Boris Karloff in the 1932 original, and by Arnold Vosloo in the 1999 remake. The report say that the film, set in the modern day, currently has two planned stories, one for a female mummy and one for a male. The decision on which to go with will be largely based on the casting process.
