Dust off your cans of spinach and prepare a fresh plate of hamburgers for Wimpy, as IDW Publishing has announced that all new comic books featuring classic comic strip character Popeye the sailor will return this April. This is all part of the company’s growing relationship with King Features, the company responsible for the Popeye property, and none other than Roger Langridge, a consistent and noted presence on the comic book scene, will pen the stories for his new series, which will be drawn by artist Bruce Ozella. Fans of the character will be delighted with the approach that Langridge plans on taking with the character.”Ever since I was a kid, the two cartoonists who have had the biggest influence on me have been Carl Barks and E.C. Segar, so getting a chance to write Popeye is quite a thrill,” said Langridge in IDW’s official press release for the event. “I’m especially pleased that IDW have decided to go with a Segar-flavored interpretation. As much as I like some of the later versions of the character, for me, it’s those early strips where the magic really happened. Just as well Segar drew everybody with big feet, because Bruce and I have some enormous shoes to fill!” Segar being the creator of the character back in the late 1920s. Popeye has been a pop culture fixture ever since, appearing in everything from cartoons, comic strips, live action movies, arcade games, clothing and so much more ever since. His return to comic books should be no surprise! The first issue will land in stores in April of this year, so be on the lookout for the series!
