At the 2015 Independent Spirit Awards, Nightcrawler director Dan Gilroy took at shot at the influx of superhero films.

Earlier tonight, Dan Gilroy’s Nightcrawler, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal, won Best First Feature at the Independent Spirit Awards. This was his acceptance speech: “Independent film, the foundation and everybody here today, I think are holdouts against a tsunami of superhero movies that have swept over this industry. We have survived and we have thrived and I think that’s true spirit.”

This seems like a bit of hypocrisy as Gilroy is no stranger to the genre. He penned the screenplay for Stan Lee’s comic book movie, The Annihilator. Funny enough, Gilroy is married to Rene Russo (“Tin Cup”), who played Thor’s mother in Marvel’s Thor and Thor: The Dark World.
