Using text from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice intercut with off-kilter horror comedy from Grahame-Smith to make the story follow a zombie hunter through her relationship troubles, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies came at just the right time when audiences were looking for a break from the never-ending torrent of dour and hopeless fictional worlds in zombie fiction.
The book turned into a monumental best-seller, remaining on the bestsellers list for 50 weeks. Following its success, there were a number of imitators, both by Grahame-Smith himself and others, and the author became a star as well, with a number of his projects heading to Hollywood in various forms.
