When Greg Capullo was pencilling Batman with Scott Snyder, it was hard to imagine a better scenario for his talents. Image and Mark Millar‘s Reborn put that idea to rest.

Bonnie and Tom, a daughter and father reunited in the life that happens after you die, contiue along their fantastical journey. While Millar and Capullo have designed a wonderous world for the heroes to explore (built off an amazing premise), they never lose sight of the heart of teh story.

That heart is in the relationship between father and daughter, two people who have the chance to get to know each other all over again while also hunting down the missing pieces of their family. Hoping that over that next ridge, that next hill, and in that next building is someone you thought lost forever. That spurring of hope is what drives all the action and fantasy elements, and it works wonderfully.

While the series has been stellar thus far, this issue is one of transitiion. By issue’s end, there is some growth in Bonnie and a new revelation in regards to the villain, but the journey is sort of back where it started, albeit in a different location. It’s an action packed and entertaining issue to be sure, but narratively it doesn’t really move the plot forward much.

Capullo’s pencils are almost enough to overcome that though. The combat is full of movement and doesn’t hold back on the brutality, and even in the grim parts of this world, the surroundings are full of color and character.

While not the strongest individual issue, Reborn continues to be one of the better books on the market right now, and if you’ve got room in your pull list you might consider giving it a try.
