In the world of Dragon Ball, there are countless heroes and villains who you would never want to fight. Characters like Son Goku and Vegeta are renowned for their insane Saiyan strength, and the Dragon Ball franchise has liberally shown off the pair’s bulging muscles through hundreds of fights.

Whether they are fighting Super Buu, Whis, or Beerus, the Saiyans manage to pool their ki strength to come out on top. Over the years, fans have gone back-and-forth with their arguments about which Saiyans are the strongest of the series. And, now, ComicBook.com is chiming in with our thoughts about the ranking.

Broly

You can’t talk about overpowered Saiyans without mentioned Broly. The antagonist is one of several unsavory Saiyans from the Dragon Ball franchise, and he is definitely a formidable enemy. Broly wields a fabled power amongst Saiyans since he can enter the Legendary Super Saiyan state. The form gifts Broly with enormous muscles and a power level over 10,000. Though Broly was first seen as a quiet character, the Saiyan became increasingly unhinged due to his weighty power and directed all his madness at Goku.

Gotenks

When the Z-Fighters were tasked with fighting Majin Buu, the crew believed one of the only ways to stop the maniacal alien was to have him fight Gotenks. That alone should tell Dragon Ball fans how powerful the fused Saiyans are.

If you are unfamiliar with the name Gotenks, you may recognize the Saiyan’s form. Gotenks is created after Goten (Goku’s son) and Trunks (Vegeta’s son) combine with each other through a fusion dance. When the two hybrid-Saiyans first went through the transformation, they did so with the the hopes of defeating Majin Buu, and their combined power almost let them. The pair may have even been able to deal lasting damage to the pink alien if it hadn’t been for Gotenk’s juvenile behavior. Both Goten and Trunks are young when they enter the form, and the transformation doesn’t miraculously level up their maturity.

Sadly, it’s their penchant for gloating that ultimately allows Majin Buu to win their battle.

Ultimate Gohan

Fans of Dragon Ball Z knew that Gohan was a boy to watch. Goku’s eldest son showed immense promise during the series, and fans were floored when Gohan reached Super Saiyan 2 before any others could undergo the transformation. However, the Saiyan’s power stalled after the achievement, and fans were left wondering if Gohan had peaked.

Luckily, he hadn’t. After Cell’s Saga ended, Gohan embraced his full potential when Majin Buu began tormenting his friends and family. Gohan received help from Old Kai and unlocked his full Saiyan potential without having to go Super Saiyan. The result kicked his power level above that of Super Saiyan 3, and his so-called ‘Ultimate’ form let Gohan beatdown Super Buu – a feat which few fans thought was possible.ย

Vegeta

When it comes to strong Saiyans, you cannot overlook Vegeta. Sure, the Prince of all Saiyans might be a bit headstrong and cocky, but Vegeta does have strength to back up his bold claims. As Goku’s self-declared rival, Vegeta is constantly training to beat the revered Saiyan, and he comes very close to matching Goku’s power level.

Even though Vegeta was never fully able to reach Super Saiyan 3 like Goku did in Dragon Ball Z, the Prince did one-up his rival with Dragon Ball GT. With Bulma’s help, the proud Saiyan was able to go Super Saiyan 4, and there are few beings which could stand up to that kind of power.

Goku

Since Goku is the star of the Dragon Ball franchise, one would expect the Saiyan to be strong. And, of course, they’d be right. Goku stands as one of the strongest Saiyans to ever live, and his power has become a benchmark for all those who come after him.

Fans of the series will know exactly why Goku ranks as a high-powered Saiyan. His signature kamehameha move can obliterate planets, and Goku can enter a variety of Super Saiyan states. He was the first to enter the form in Dragon Ball Z, sitting a precedent for the Frieza Saga. And, in Dragon Ball Super, the hero has recently gained access to the Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan form which is about as badass as it sounds.

Gogeta

What happens when you take two of the strongest Saiyans in all of Dragon Ball and fuse them together? Well, you get one insanely strong Super Saiyan. In Dragon Ball Z, fans were introduced to the fused Saiyan Gogeta when the demon Janemba made a bid for Earth. Unsurprisingly, Goku and Vegeta weren’t going to let that attempt go by quietly.

The rivals struggled to defeat Janemba when they began their battle and realized they would need to fuse if they wanted to beat him. Though their first attempt failed, Goku and Vegeta were eventually able to perform a perfect fusion dance to create Gogeta. The fused hero contained all of Goku’s innate fighting skill with Vegeta’s strategic mind.

Vegito

When Saiyans combine themselves using a fusion dance, there is no denying their power. Fusions like Gogeta and Gotenks carry insane power levels – but they could be even stronger. According to Dragon Ball lore, the best way for Saiyans to fuse is by using Potara Earring Fusion. So, when Goku and Vegeta use the superior method to showdown with Super Buu, it’s easy to see why the pink alien was overwhelmed.

The Potara fusion melds Goku and Vegeta into a new Saiyan known as Vegito. While his power level is similar to that of Gogeta, Vegito reigns supreme because of his ability to tap into supreme kai. When the two Saiyans fuse into Vegito for the first time, they do so to defeat Supreme Buu who has absorbed the powers of both Piccolo and Gotenks – and he absolutely crushes the baddie.
