The Japanese mega-corporation Sony today revealed a surprisingly positive quarterly earnings report, beating projections largely on the success of films like The Amazing Spider-Man 2, 22 Jump Street, and the launch of the PlayStation 4 video game console.

Sony’s net income rose to $260 million. Operating income was up 96.7 per cent from the previous year. Overall sales were up 5.8 per cent.

Sony has been struggling with a flagging entertainment division and a decrease in consumer demand for traditional electronics.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has grossed approximately $706 million at the worldwide box office. Along with the success of 22 Jump Street, this has led to much better year for Sony’s film studio than last year’s, which hinged on the underperforming After Earth.

There have been lots of rumors about the Sony potentially selling off it’s entertainment division entirely. If there was any ever truth to those rumors, one has to wonder if this report might change some minds.
