The Flash: Andrew Kreisberg and Teddy Sears Talk Jay Garrick and Velocity 6

Tonight’s episode of The Flash, titled “Legends of Today,” brought viewers their first exposure to Velocity 6.

A serum developed by Harrison Wells of Earth-2, Velocity 6 was described by Caitlin Snow as “nitrous oxide for speedsters.” It was developed to provide an extra burst of speed for a short period, ideally to allow Barry to square off against Zoom, but when we saw it in action, it was used to briefly restore Jay Garrick’s severed tie to the Speed Force.

“If you’re a fan of the comics, you know that a big part is ‘Velocity 9,’ and today you met ‘Velocity 6,’” “Flash” showrunner Andrew Kreisberg said during a screening of the episodes yesterday. “It’s safe to say that there will be a few more iterations of that formula. How it plays out, and how it works, and who uses it, and the effects that it has, that’s something you’ll have to watch.”

At this point, Jay is unwilling to continue being Wells’s guinea pig…but could those feelings come into conflict with his desire to do good and to re-establish his ideantity as The Flash?

“I think Jay shows up with this struggle with, ‘Who am I now that I’m not this guy?’” Explained actor Teddy Sears, who plays Garrick. “This guy that was able to do a lot of good when he had the Speed Force. He’s wrestling with his identity in a way, and adapting to life without it. He’s not jonesing for a fix or anything, but he’s aware of what potential Velocity 6 has on his life, but he’s also very clear about, ‘I don’t want to go down that path.’ But I think like anyone who has seen the other side, there are haunting memories of what could have been.”

…And, of course, a general distrust for Harrison Wells, who wasn’t forced into the light on Earth-2, and remained dishonest with the public about the impact of the particle accelerator explosion that created the metahumans. It’s easy to speculate that the involvement of Caitlin Snow — with whom Jay has had no shortage of chemistry — might sway him a bit.
