Back when Jean Grey first appeared in a trailer for James Mangold’s The Wolverine, we were chastised as spoilers for noting that the rumors of Famke Janssen’s cameo had been confirmed.Collider has provided an image, though, that more or less puts it out there on the table; there’s a poster done in the style of Japanese Sumi-e ink art, and it features none other than Jean Grey, calling into question how key her role might be, even if it is as small as seems likely. That’s particularly an interesting question because of remarks Mangold made in another Collider piece today, in which he suggested that The Wolverine may not dovetail as nicely into X-Men: Days of Future Past as fans have been expecting.”Bryan [Singer] and I have talked and he’s seen what we’ve done,” they quote him as telling SFX of the X-Men helmer. “Clearly the reality is that we are all trying to work together and make things groove together. But the trick is we were making our movie before Bryan came on and before I knew what they were up to in that film. Our agenda was always our agenda and our movie stands alone, so the journey we take Logan on in The Wolverine, we bring to a close.”So–what IS The Wolverine‘s connection to the larger X-Men universe? And given his limited involvement with Bryan Singer so far, does all this suggest that perhaps Mark Millar’s “Marvel advisory capacity” to Fox won’t really kick in until Fantastic Four?
