At a shareholder meeting earlier today, Warner Bros. laid out the next three years of LEGO movies, confirming rough release dates for the next three films.
2016 will see the release of The LEGO Ninjago movie, which we already knew was scheduled for release on September 23 of that year. This film is assumed to not be directly tied to the universe established in The LEGO Movie, but will instead provide the kind of action cartoon that young boys tend to love. The film will feature ninjas and samurai as heroes fighting mystical enemies such as dragons and snake people. Charlie Bean will direct the film, from a script by Dan and Kevin Hageman.

2017 will see the release of The LEGO Batman Movie, a direct spinoff of The LEGO Movie. The film will see Will Arnett returning to voice the character. As a standout character in The LEGO Movie, and building on the always huge popularity of Batman, this movie could be as big of a box office success as The LEGO Movie was. The film will be directed by Chrisย McKay, who was an animator on The LEGO Movie.
The LEGO Movie 2, a direct sequel to the film that launched the franchise, will release in 2018. We don’t have much to go on in terms of plot, or which cast members will be returning, as of yet. Chrisย McKay was originally set to direct the sequel, but with him taking The LEGO Batman movie instead, the director’s chair remains open on this one.
