In between all those viewings of the Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer, some might have stopped to wonder why, exactly, the titular android wanted to wipe out civilization.

Brian Truitt of “USA Today” may have the answers. In his latest “Nerdcast” podcast, Truitt revealed that he visited Age of Ultron’s set a while back. During his tour, Truitt claims to have discovered Ultron’s motivations in the Avengers sequel. It turns out; Ultron actually thinks he’s doing the humankind a favor by annihilating it.

“Ultron is programmed to maintain peace but becomes sentient,” Truitt said. “What happens is that he gets it in his mind that he needs to wipe out humanity for the sake of humanity, and that’s why there’s the Ultron army.”

Truitt didn’t say who told him this information, but it does line up with most of the Ultron rumors. If they are true, Ultron’s motivations sound like very similar to Loki’s from Avengers. The villain thought that mankind’s greatest flaw was its ability to choose. Only by losing that ability could they truly know peaceโ€”something that Norse God was all-too eager to help them with.

As more information and scenes are released, such as the special event following next week’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., viewers will be better equipped to differentiate Avengers villains’ motivations.
