Weta Digital has put out a new visual effects breakdown video that showcases the brilliant work that their digital artists did on Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.

For the destruction ofLaketown sequence, 1,500 buildings were modeled – interiors and exteriors – to help bring realism toSmaug’s destruction of the town. For the burning ofLaketown, over 1,100 separateCGI fires were created and were hand-placed on a shot-for-shot basis. For the battle of Lonely Mountain, animators used new virtual stage tools to bring the epic CG battle sequences to life.
