If the reviews talked you out of seeing Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice in theaters this weekend, you’re probably left wondering, “Who won?”

Well, we can tell you, but we do have to give the obligatory, self-explanatory, people-would-be-mad-if-it-wasn’t-here spoiler warning. We’re literally about to spoil the entire movie below. So, there’s that.

Dawn of Justice isn’t the first time DC’s two most iconic characters have done battle. They’ve squared off several times in the comic book and animated mediums. The results have been split, though one has historically tallied up more W’s than the other.

In Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, the hero with a new tally in the W column is Batman. Though no one is killed by the other, Batman manages to wrangle Superman to the ground using various forms of Kryptonite weapons and just as he is about to deliver the final blow with a Kryptonite spear, Superman seeks mercy for his mother.

See, if you haven’t seen the movie, you don’t know that the real reason they’re fighting is because they’ve been manipulated by Lex Luthor. Lex tips off Batman’s deep seeded hatred for Superman to easily get him ready for battle with the Son of Krypton and kidnaps Martha Kent, threatening to kill her if Superman doesn’t kill Batman. The two go to battle and after they both get a few good shots on each other, it is ultimately Superman’s kindness which Batman capitalizes on for the win.

Of course, later in the film, Superman dies by the hand (or bony wrist) of Doomsday as Batman looks on but at that point, they were best friends.
