Alexander, who helmed Punisher: War Zone, says being a female director for a superheroine film of this magnitude is a most daunting task.

“If she says yes, everybody will be very happy, including me,” Alexander said. “Still, I don’t see at this point why anyone would say yes. There is huge pressure โ€ฆ If [a female director] does fail, then all of a sudden it’s ‘all women suck at directing.’”

An active presence on social media, Alexander has been outspoken on gender equality and the discriminationย that women face in the entertainment industry.

Once a Wonder Woman director is announced, Alexander plans to publish a blog post asking for transparency regarding the production process. The filmmaker believes the transparency would make it harder to use a female director or talent as a scapegoat for any potential failures or shortcomings of the movie.

“People need to understand the system,” Alexander said. “We have to demand transparency so we as a public can judge whether she f**cked up or not.”

Alexander understands that demanding such transparency is a most controversial move.

“It’s not [considered] proper to talk about a project while it’s still in development,” she said. “If this town had more transparency โ€ฆ people would go out of their minds.”

Wonder Woman will star Gal Gadot as the titular superheroine and is slated to hit theaters June 23, 2017.
