Marvel has given readers many of the greatest villains of all time. Marvel did an amazing job of humanizing superheroes, and they did something similar to supervillains. Marvel supervillains weren’t the gimmicky villains that readers got out of the DC Multiverse, but more evil beings, monsters with amazing costumes and deep backstories. Now, obviously, not every Marvel villain is a groundbreaking antagonist, but the publisher has done a lot to make supervillains a more serious part of the superhero formula. There are many kinds of Marvel villains out there, and each class of villain has some of the best supervillains ever created.

Marvel’s villains were much more scary than their counterparts from the distinguished competition. Marvel’s more mature, grounded feel made supervillains creepier than ever; these villains didn’t just want to make some money and stay out of jail, they wanted to harm the innocent. The ten Marvel villains are the creepiest, their evil driving them to do the most frightening things imaginable.
10) Purple Man

Purple Man is one of Marvel’s most monstrous characters. Purple Man’s powers allowed him to control the minds of anyone around him, as he was given the ability to use his pheromones to make anyone do anything he wanted. Purple Man was something of a joke until Alias, which revealed that he had used his mind control powers to sexually abuse Jewel, the hero identity of Jessica Jones. This creepiness became a hallmark of the character, and has changed the way that everyone looks at him. Before, he was just an Eastern European spy that did some damage that no one really cared about. After Alias he became one of the most hated villains in the Marvel Universe (and he got a cathartic beating at the hands of Luke Cage).
9) Mephisto

Mephisto finally made his MCU debut, after years of fans guessing that he was behind everything, though he isn’t the most popular villain in the comics. That said, he’s done a lot of terrible things, including being used as the mechanism to get rid of Spider-Man and Mary Jane’s marriage. However, even before that, we all knew just how creepy that Mephisto could be. Mephisto is all about temptation; he wants to bring as many souls as he can into his own realm, and offers people their heart’s desire in exchange for everything they are. Mephisto has no morality and will give whatever you want to do what he wants. There’s something immeasurably creepy about the way Mephisto operates, and the loincloth he wears adds to his whole sleazily evil feel.
8) Grim Reaper

Eric Williams was the bad seed younger brother of Simon Williams, and his manipulations forced Simon to be transformed into Wonder Man so Eric could stay free. Eric eventually became a supervillain known as Grim Reaper. Grim Reaper had no powers, instead using a scythe that could fire energy blasts at his enemies. Grim Reaper died eventually, but was able to come back to life; much like his brother Wonder Man, he is functionally immortal. Grim Reaper mastered necromantic magics over the years and is constantly killed and resurrected. He’s a monster who only wants one thing out of the world โ the death of his brother and pain for his friends. The Grim Reaper will do anything to destroy his brother’s life, going to every length to do damage to Wonder Man and the Avengers.
7) Shadow King

Mind controlling villains always have a very creepy vibe to them, and few can match the Shadow King on that scale. The Shadow King is one of Marvel’s most dangerous villains, a powerful psionic entity that has existed since the beginning of life in the multiverse. The Shadow King is a representation of the darkness in the psyche of all living things, and has haunted the nightmares of the living for eons. The Shadow King would take control of the body of Amahl Farouk two hundred years ago, and since then has wreaked havoc on humanity for his own amusement. The Shadow King wants nothing more to control every living being in existence, taking away everything that makes individuals special. Shadow King uses people like puppets, and will take control of anyone in order to fulfill his goals. The Shadow King is a monster unlike any other out there, a creepy thing that has always existed just outside of the view of the living, a chilling threat that you can’t really find but is always there.
6) Green Goblin

Green Goblin is Spider-Man’s greatest villain, a monster that has haunted his life for years. Norman Osborn has always been a creepy villain. His green and purple costume, topped off by his unsettling mask has been a symbol of terror in Spider-Man’s life. Green Goblin shares a lot in common with the Joker; both of them are monsters who will do anything to hurt their foes, and both of them do it with a smile on their face, their demented laughter echoing through the alleys they fight their battles in. Green Goblin doesn’t just want to knock Spider-Man out; he wants to take everything good out of his life. He enjoys destroying the things that Peter Parker loves, and his evil glee makes him the creepiest Spider-Man villain out there.
5) Sabretooth

Sabretooth has menaced Wolverine for decades, doing everything he can to make Wolverine’s life miserable. However, what makes Sabretooth so creepy isn’t just his actions against Wolverine, but that he treats the entire world like that. Sabretooth loves causing pain and suffering; he was tortured as a child by his parents, and he spread that pain to everyone he could in the years since. Sabretooth enjoys the power he has over the lives of others. He knows that he’s basically unstoppable and can destroy just about everyone who would stand against him. This saw him become one of the most dangerous people on the planet, traveling around the world and doing whatever he wanted. Sabretooth doesn’t care if you’re an adult or a child, he doesn’t care about gender or your job or whether you’re a human or a mutant. He wants to hurt you just so he can feel more alive.
4) Bullseye

Bullseye is Daredevil’s most dangerous villain; sure, the Kingpin does the most damage to Daredevil, but his tool for that is usually Bullseye. Bullseye is insane and he loves his job. He just wants to kill people and takes so much happiness from his work. He always has a smile on his face when he works, and is constantly joking around while he kills as many people as he can. Much like Green Goblin and Sabretooth, Bullseye is all about causing the most suffering he can every way he can. Calling Bullseye an animal isn’t exactly correct; while animals have the same amount of morality to their actions as Bullseye, the vast majority don’t kill more than they could eat or play with their food. Bullseye kills everyone he can get away with, and the more pain he causes the better.
3) Mister Sinister

Ever since the beginning, Mister Sinister has had a creepy vibe that has stayed with him through every change to the character over the decades. Mister Sinister first became known as a shadowy manipulator, his obsession with genetics and cloning making him see life as something to be played with. Mister Sinister is a complicated monster; he was created by Nathaniel Essex as a way to become a god, and spent the decades of his life vivisecting and experimenting on everyone he could get his hands. Sinister doesn’t take glee in the pain he causes, he takes glee in the abominations that he creates. Every person he sees isn’t a person to him, they’re just a connection of genes that he can play with like building blocks. While Sinister has become funnier as the years have gone on, this has only made him even creepier, as know he’s not just coldly cutting apart the people in his clutches but is making jokes the entire time.
2) Carnage

Cletus Kasady is the luckiest serial killer ever. Kasady had been caught and was in jail when he was introduced to his new cellmate, Eddie Brock. Brock was eventually rescued by the Venom symbiote, which left a piece of itself behind. Cletus bonded with the baby symbiote and became the monster known as Carnage. Everything about Carnage is creepy. His blood red symbiote looks like a flayed body, and his toothy maw is a thing of nightmares. Carnage is all about spreading as much death as he can, tearing through everyone in his way every chance he gets. Carnage takes pride in the death he spreads, and is one of the most evil beings that anyone has ever had the misfortune of meeting. Not even death can keep Carnage down, as he always returns to spill more blood.
1) Red Skull

Red Skull is a Nazi, which definitely helps him in the creepy department. However, even if he wasn’t a Nazi, he’d still be the creepiest villain in the Marvel Universe. It’s the red skull that gives him that name. There’s something about skulls and skeletons that engenders a primal fear in humans. Red Skull believes in the superiority of himself and the German race over everyone else. He sees those who aren’t like him as less than human. If he was just a killer, he would still be a monster, but it’s the way he wants to spread suffering that makes him so creepy. Red Skull is the kind of person to look at anyone without blonde hair, blue eyes, and white skin as less tham human, and that’s the monstrous thing anyone can be. He is the epitome of everything wrong with humanity.
