The biggest winner of the evening was Saga from Image Comics, a longstanding fan favorite and a top seller for the publisher. The creator-owned series won the Eisner Award for Best Continuing Series. Artist Fiona Staples won two Eisners, one Best Penciller/Inker or Penciller/Inker Team for her interior art on Saga and another for Best Cover Artist for her Saga covers. Writer Brian K. Vaughan won the Eisner Award for Best Writer for his work on Saga and his other Image Comics series, Paper Girls.

Saga is both a sprawling space opera an intimate family story, with both aspects being heavily influenced by Star Wars. The story follows two star-crossed lovers from opposite sides of a galactic war, Alana and Marko, as they both go AWOL. While on the run, they do their best to raise their young daughter, Hazel, who narrates the series from some time in the future.

Other big wins for the evening were Jeff Lemire and Dean Ormston’s Dark Horse Comics series Black Hammer, which won the Eisner Award for Best New Series. Black Hammer follows a group of old school superheroes and adventurers who find themselves banished from their home dimension and forced to live a secluded life on a farm until they are called back for one last mission. A spinoff series has already been announced.

Tom King and Gabriel Walta’s 12-issue The Vision series won the Eisner Award for Best Limited Series. King and Walta put a unique spin on Marvel Comics’ android Avengers by showing him trying to have a normal, suburban family life, which ended only in tragedy.
