5 Marvel Characters Whose Mastery of Fear Make Them Worthy of a Yellow Lantern Ring

The most significant rival to DC Comicsโ€™ Green Lantern Corps is the Yellow Lantern Corps, dubbed the โ€œSinestro Corps.โ€ It was founded by the disgraced Green Lantern Thaal Sinestro, who crafted Yellow Rings that harness fear instead of willpower like Green Lantern rings. Those chosen to don the Yellow Lantern ring can instill and weaponize fear. Many of these followers of Sinestro are, therefore, not surprisingly, serial killers, tyrants, and monsters. With these miscreants, the Sinestro Corps strikes terror across the universe, seeking to bring order through fear and intimidation. If the Sinestro Corps was to find its way to the Marvel Universe, it would have plenty of worthy candidates for its Yellow Rings to choose from.

Marvel has many psychopaths and warlords that strike terror into the hearts of innumerable people. Interestingly, though, not only would villains be potential recruits to join the Sinestro Corps. As Batman has shown, heroes who use fear as a weapon against criminals can also be found worthy of a Yellow Lantern Ring.

5) Moon Knight

Marc Spector, aka Moon Knight, is the terror of New Yorkโ€™s criminal underbelly. Like Batman, Marc weaponizes fear to intimidate his opponents. He wears a white costume so that criminals can see him coming and to paralyze them in fright. Marcโ€™s brutal and unpredictable fighting style also makes him a figure most crooks are too scared to confront.

Most people who fight Marc are left with broken bones and missing teeth. A Yellow Lantern ring would allow Marc to further utilize his fear-inducing talents to an even greater effect.

4) Apocalypse

In DC Comics, Sinestro believes that order can be achieved through fear and the exercise of power. The X-Men villain Apocalypse shares similar views and implements them in his schemes for world domination. Born thousands of years ago in Ancient Egypt, Apocalypse was one of the first mutants. His appearance made people view him as a monster, and he became one. He retaliated against those who shunned him by becoming a bloodthirsty warlord feared by all.

In the modern era, Apocalypse has continued his quest to conquer the Earth. He controls his minions through fear and intimidation and has killed countless people. Apocalypse believes that only the strong should survive, and a Yellow Lantern Ring would only increase his incredible power.

3) Ghost Rider

There are few figures as feared in Hell, Heaven, and Earth than Johnny Blaze, aka the Ghost Rider. After making a deal with the demon Mephisto, Johnny became bound to the spirit of vengeance known as Zarathos. With his flaming skull, Johnny strikes fear into the hearts of sinners. Johnnyโ€™s hellish powers further justify this fear. His Hellfire can burn a personโ€™s very soul, and he can manifest weapons like chains and firearms. None of these abilities compares to his signature ability: the Penance Stare.

By looking into a personโ€™s eyes, Johnny can make them feel the collective pain and suffering they have inflicted on others. The effects of the Penance Stare range from permanent psychological trauma to the destruction of oneโ€™s soul. From his hellish appearance to nightmarish and soul-destroying abilities, Johnny would be a prime candidate to bear a Yellow Lantern Ring.

2) Carnage

Cletus Cassidy, aka Carnage, is one of the most sadistic and infamous serial killers in Marvel Comics. For almost his entire life, Cletus has taken great pleasure in torturing and butchering innocent people. When Cletus bonded with the Carnage symbiote, his only goal was to cause more death and destruction. During the โ€œMaximum Carnageโ€ event, Cletus and his psychopathic friends went on a city-wide murder spree that saw hundreds, if not thousands, of civilians slaughtered.

The bodies and a few traumatized survivors that Cletus has left in his wake make him one of the most feared mass murderers in Marvel. With his nightmarish appearance, high body count, and pure sadism, Cletus is precisely the type of monster who would love to join the Sinestro Corps and whom the Corps would gladly welcome.

1) Red Skull

The fascist Nazi and leader of Hydra, Johann Schmidt, aka Red Skull, is one of the most evil and terrifying villains in Marvelโ€™s history. The Red Skullโ€™s nightmarish appearance was designed to instill fear in the hearts of the Allies during World War II. His cruel nature and tactical mind also further cemented him as a terrifying war criminal and terrorist. He has committed numerous atrocities during and after the war, with millions of deaths on his hands. On top of weapons of mass destruction, he uses propaganda to instigate mass panic and manipulate people towards his cause.

The Red Skull desires nothing less than to remake the world in his image โ€“ which is pretty hideous โ€“ and rule with an iron fist. His ability to use fear and paranoia to further his own gains and desire for power would allow him to master a Yellow Lantern Ring.
