Spawn and Witchblade are planning to meet up and go medieval for the second time.

At Comic-Con International: San Diego, Image Comics co-founder and Spawn creator Todd McFarlane revealed that a new Medieval Spawn/Medieval Witchblade miniseries from Brian Harberlin and Brian Holguin is in the works and expected to debut in late 2017. Here’s the teaser art released by Haberlin.

Medieval Spawn and Medieval Witch teamed up previously in a 1996 Medieval Spawn Witchblade three-issue series written by Garth Ennis and drawn by Brandon Peterson.

The Medieval Spawn is Sir John of York, a mid-15th-century knight who took part in the civil war in the fictional country of Bahavia. He and several of his fellow knights were released from service to the King of Bahavia, Louis II when they mistook some offhand words spoken in anger as orders to kill the Archbishop of Bahavia, Sir Thomas. When Sir John later approached Louis II on a battlefield in Freedonia to seek forgiveness the king’s bodyguards assumed the worst and killed John.

After a life of killing, John was sent to Hell where he made a deal with the devil. He was returned to Earth several years later and equipped with symbiotic armor. He traveled Bahavia performing good deeds in hopes of redeeming himself for his past life, and also battled the Clown.

Medieval Witchblade is Sir John’s former lover Katarina Godliffe, a roguish adventurer who came to possess the powerful Witchblade after discovering it in a pile of manure while working off a bar tab. Medieval Witchblade came to be aware of Medieval Spawn when Spawn battled The Darkness. The two then teamed up to overthrow an evil king.

Medieval Spawn was later killed by the demon hunter Angela and the Witchblade left Katarina when a child was killed during a bar brawl. She later went on to become the immortal sheriff of the realm of Faerie.

Death seems no obstacle to reuniting John and Katarina for a second Medieval Spawn/Medieval Witchblade series in 2017.

Medieval Spawn was introduced into the Spawn mythos, along with Angela and the former Hellspawn called Cogliostro, in Spawn #9, written by Neil Gaiman. All three characters were tied up in a legal dispute between McFarlane and Gaiman over ownership but after a decade in court, the two finally settled the dispute, freeing up Medieval Spawn for new appearances.
