Could Justice League‘s Superman be taking some cues from The Reign of the Supermen! storyline when he eventually shows up in the movie?

Well, filmmaker Zack Snyder certainly wants you to think so.

“It should be perfect,” Snyder told reporters during a visit to the set of Justice League last week. “Longer, I guess. That’s what the myths are anyway.”

Of course, that’s no surprise to longtime DC Comics readers: when Superman returned from the dead after his battle with Doomsday, he had long hair and a black “regeneration suit” costume with a silver “S.” That black suit/silver “S” combination was teased a little bit in Man of Steel, when Superman had a nightmare sequence in which he was wearing a similar uniform (albeit with a cape, which the comics didn’t have).

Both Snyder and star Henry Cavill have expressed a love for the Death and Return of Superman storylines in the past, with Cavill saying during the Man of Steel press tour that he hoped to do the Doomsday battle (that’s one off the bucket list, Cavill). Given the adherence to The Dark Knight Returns in the Batman portion of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the nods to Doomsday! in the past, it’s easy to imagine that they would overtly reference those stories.

Justice League Part One, directed by Zack Snyder, is filming now. It also stars Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, and Ezra Miller as The Flash. Spider-Man villain Willem Dafoe has joined the cast as Atlantean soldier Vulco, while Amber Heard will appear as Mera.

The movie is set to hit theaters on November 17, 2017 — the twenth-fifth anniversary of the release of Superman #75, the best-selling finale to “Doomsday!: The Death of Superman.”
