Hopes are high for Warner Bros. Suicide Squad, and if the movie fulfills its lofty expectations, you can be sure the studio will see it as a goldmine for future sequels and properties.

Director David Ayer addressed the possibilities of these characters appearing in future films, and the possibilities are endless when you take into account DC’s expansive universe.

“I think that because of the nature of the comic book universe and the DC universe, it’s really a fractal. It’s really infinite anyways you could go. Especially the DC universe, I think, is one of the most complex fiction universes. What with the crisis, and pre-crisis and the multi-dimensional nature and all the time-lines and everything like that. Each one of these characters could be their own film. Suicide Squad could be a zillion films.”

We already know that a Harley Quinn spinoff is in the works, which will almost assuredly involved Joker in some way. Depending on which of the characters hits with audiences the most, more could be in store. Just judging from the trailers, many fans would be all in for a Deadshot, Katana, and Captain Boomerang starring vehicle. Boomerang looks like a ball of chaotic energy, and Katana’s history could provide for some interesting story possibilities. With Will Smith to ground it, I think that’s the recipe for an entertaining film.

Suicide Squad rolls into theaters on August 5th.
